Welcome To Superjazz
Grab your handheld fan, a cold drink and some fine bud to relax to carefully created sounds by SuperJazzClub, a unique collective of Ghanaian individuals creating art and music on their own artistic terms.
In an industry where mainstream music is predominantly dominated by the rapid, high tempos of dance music, trap and Afrobeats, superjazzclub offers a more laid back approach with their alternative sound. What brought these couple black kids together was a shared desire to create and express their art outside the stereotypical expectations surrounding popular African music.
The super team is made up of BiQo, Obed, Seyyoh, Tano Jackson, Oliver Nortt, Gloria Denniiis, Joey Turks, Ansah Live and Anthony Orleans-Lindsay. More than a musical group, SuperJazz boasts a range of creatives: from filmmakers, photographers, to DJs, inhouse producers and artists all coming together to share their personal DIY vision on experimental music.
If you enjoy music from Childish Gambino’s V3005 era or any kind of alternative lo-fi type beats then superjazzclub makes music for you. With their far out name, the team is not actually a collective made up of jazz musicians. However, the smoothness of their transitions and a generally chill vibe on production makes their name such an intelligent nod to their unique sound.
SuperJazz music team is made up of singers Seyyoh, Joey Turks and BiQo, rappers Tano Jackson and Ansah Live and producer/singer Obed. Yet with each individual putting their own twist on lo-fi, RnB funk and hip-hop, it’s actually incredibly hard to define specific roles or genres for the team. Obed for example could sing and produce music whilst Seyyoh might rap, sing and write music for the team and Ansah may produce as well. Think the Internet, with each member respectively experimenting with their sounds and individual craft, coming together to make some of the smoothest easy listening music you and I will hear coming out of Ghana currently.
Building up to the release of their debut EP ‘For All The Good Times’, the collective paid homage to this individuality by employing a minimalistic touch to blending rap, RnB and electric soundscapes into thoughtful toe-tapping melodies. From Tano Jackson’s funk-filled track ‘Sunday Someday’ featuring Obed and Ansah Live to Seyyoh’s haunting vocals on ‘Enough’, superjazzclub’s members consistently deliver music that just makes you want to lay down in a field and stargaze with your friends.
Even on their faster-paced offerings like ‘What You Want’ off the EP, the team still maintains their distinct, dreamy edge. The simplistic but catchy chorus by Seyyoh balances the song’s tempo and respective verses by Tano and BiQo, turning it into a feel-good tune, making it a great addition to any post function playlist. Songs like the ironically titled ‘Till the Morning’ are perfect for those late-night to early morning sessions with friends and loved ones creating a thought-provoking but fun atmosphere for those sleepy drives back into the city.
Distinctively moody, carefully created and intentionally original, superjazzclub is making Ghanaian alternative music on their own terms. Between rap and RnB, house and soul, these couple black kids are inviting us into their once secretive world, giving us a soundtrack ‘For all The Good Times’ in life.
