Nigerian Afropop royalty Mr Eazi is bridging the gap between West Africa and the Caribbean once again, teaming up with the legendary producer Dre Skull for a massive collaborative project. The duo have officially announced their upcoming joint mixtape, “Yard & Yanga”, set to drop later this year through Mixpak Records and emPawa Africa. To kick off the rollout, they have delivered a hypnotic new bashment banger titled “Lambo“, featuring none other than the dancehall king himself, Vybz Kartel.
The title “Yard & Yanga” perfectly captures the essence of this cross-continental link up, blending the popular Jamaican patois colloquialism for home with the Nigerian Pidgin term for showing off and flexing. This project is a deliberate, Afro-Diasporic celebration that honors the historic and undeniable interplay between the sounds of the West African coast and the Caribbean islands. It represents a musical dialogue that has been quietly happening for decades, now brought to the forefront by two masters of their respective crafts.
This link up has actually been years in the making, born out of a deep-rooted friendship between Mr Eazi, who helped orchestrate the global Afrobeats explosion with definitive anthems like “Leg Over” and “Skin Tight”, and Dre Skull, the mastermind behind culture-shifting dancehall albums like Vybz Kartel’s “Kingston Story” and Popcaan’s “Where We Come From”. The two are no strangers to working together, having previously blessed fans with the heavy-hitting “Sekkle and Bop” alongside Popcaan, and last year’s infectious dancehall-pop fusion “Dance Pon Me”.

While many know Mr Eazi for his pioneering Banku music sound, dancehall elements have subtly textured his catalog since his early days in the 2010s. Reflecting on the direction of the new project, Eazi notes that in another life, he might have pursued a career strictly within Afro-dancehall, but clarifies that this specific mixtape is straight dancehall filtered through his own unique African interpretation.
Bringing Vybz Kartel onto “Lambo” makes total sense given the deep creative history he shares with Dre Skull, a partnership that goes all the way back to the seminal 2009 classic “Yuh Love”. Dre Skull heavily emphasizes that Kartel is a generational talent who brought the perfect, raw energy needed to complement Mr Eazi’s infectious hook. The visual identity of the single matches this cultural synthesis as well, featuring hand-drawn cover art by U.K.-based illustrator Kione Grandison that beautifully mirrors the shared sensibilities of West African and Caribbean street art.
