NEW SOUNDS – WEEK 15
It’s Friday, the weekend is here already. What are your plans for this weekend? Whatever your plans are, one or way or the other music is definitely involved, allow me to give you a few songs to jam and vibe to this weekend. We took the extra step to acknowledge amazing producers behind the songs we listen to back to back. This week, we spotlight the mix masters, the unsung heroes who work on the songs to make them perfect for our listening pleasure.
Artiste: Kay Em
Song Title: Maabre3 Oo
Producer:30 Shot Jay
Mix Master: Dj Oxy
Maabre3 oo by Kay Em was inspired by Roddy Rich’s “Down Below.” “Maabre3 Oo” is an inspirational song that talks about the struggle in a chosen hustle -being an unrecognized artiste in Kay Em’s case- and also the will to never give up till the goal of the hustle is achieved. Kay Em seeks to motivate listeners to be persistent and consistent in their hustle with this piece.
Artiste: KPAKPO LEE x IZZIK x OBS’
Song Title: NoseBleed
Producer: KPAKPO Lee
Mix Master: JBUX
On This track KPAKPO LEE, IZZIK & OBS’ rap about “HUSTLE “ and how they would hustle hard till their “nose bleed”. “Nose bleed” can be referred to like the results of a hash or hard situation one has to go through before
achieving success. This song navigates different struggles which the youth have to go through before success is eventually achieved.
“ Nosebleed” is also a motivational themed
track for young hustlers because the youth need to know they are all they got, go harder or go home (YOU GET RICH OR DIE TRYING).
Artiste: Justina
Song title: Do Ya by Justina Meza
Producer: Enid
Mix Master: Qube
“I wrote my song ‘Do Ya’ when I was 18 and in my first year of uni. ‘Do Ya’ actually started off as a freestyle I made to a loop from GarageBand, so the first verse till the end of the chorus was just me rambling, sing rapping or whatever you want to call it. It was after I read what I had freestyled, that I decided that I would just make a cheeky song about indecisive people in undecided love. So ‘Do Ya’ is just me vocalising the frustrations that come with liking someone who either clearly likes you but is not doing anything about it, or simply doesn’t like you back, and since you can’t fully tell what vibe he or she is putting out, it feels like a cross between, “aiight forget you” and “the world is coming to an end”. In the end, however, you just try to take the initiative and ask, “So, do you like me or Nah?“ I relate to this song a lot and I know there’s a lot of people out there who will feel the same way about this song just as the writer did when writing it. Enjoy the amazing vocals by Justina on Do Ya on SoundCloud.
Artiste: Kelvin Black ft Squyb
Song Title: “X”
Producer: Squyb
Mix Master: Squyb
“8 years trying to catch my wave bus in the music industry, growing from a boy to a man, regretting major decisions I took, accepting my loses till now, reality checks, catching up, with family & friends, late nights in my feelings and I still can’t let this Dream go, we doing this till we find “x””. Just like back in school, core mathematics question will be like find X, you need to go back and forth, up and down just because you wanted to find x, it all wouldn’t make sense until you eventually find x, that’s the exact situation Kelvin finds himself in. Let’s help him find “X” in his new song which features Sqyub.
Artiste: DJ Kwamzy ft Nxwrth & Kwaku Bs
Title: Atta Ayi
Producer: DJ Kwamzy
Mix Master: Nxwrth
“The inspiration behind this song was that Nxwrth and I wanted to push the trap scene in Ghana because we felt like pushing this type of genre in the music scene was a way of doing something for the kids, the ragers out there. The name of the song Atta Ayi was suggested by Nxwrth and the reason why he used that name was that he wanted us to do a song that the kids would relate to and me being the producer of the song, I also wanted to do something different, something that could move the crowd”. Artiste: Moor Sound & Garvie
Title: Super 2
Producer: Moor Sound
Mix Master: Moor Sound
After collaborating with Kiddblack on their Joint EP earlier this year, the RGG Studios Producer / DJ creates well-structured chemistry with rapper Garvie. After releasing his project “Area Boys” with EdgarTheDyke, he aims to drop more tunes. Magic happens anytime a rapper entrusts a single producer a task of crafting beats for the entirety of a project, ideas are bounced, pitched together and the end results comes off like a beautifully cohesive marriage of beats and rhymes.
With Garvie’s ability to mix languid and fluid flow with menacing gangsta/youth rap lines, Moor Sound’s work is made easier. On a chirpy tone with pillowy drum hits, Garvie anchors the song with his deliberate yet subtly melodic chorus on “SCENE”, a song in which he co-produced with Moor sound. Edgar The Dyke stabilizes the song with an unshakable verse filled with all sorts of flex, but the stand out verse is the last from Copta, whose verse is lively and catchy throughout the song with lines like “we fit do things but we only be friends” a pidgin term that’s used amongst the youth. With Edgar The Dyke and Copta featuring on the first song, Producer/singer Magnom kicks the second song, he retreats on “Big Dada b” with his heavy but clear voice on a wobbly mid-tempo beat crafted by Garvie and Moor sound, setting the mood of the song with simple words that defines his attributes with girls, Garvie modulates the song with an icy verse, rooting back to his style of well laced calm words, Moor sound’s production is middy, but definitely a danceable one. You hear the word “DRIP” and nothing but trap music comes to mind, very common but essential to the rap culture, filled with wild amounts of personality, style, craft and flex, the last song off the Single pack is definitely a bop. Garvie’s writing skill is diametrical, a fuse of wealthy words backed with his soothing voice, he boasts about how his “drip” is unmatchable on a production that literally has water dripping in the background with well-uniformed beat drops that once again shows how good Moor Sound is when it comes to crafting Hip-hop beats, “drip” is that tune you put on repeat in a car while fully dressed up for an event, it’s a high level of flex type of song, and its elevated to its peak with a guest verse from London rapper Zana May, her voice itself is instrumental, wrapping around the beats with her infectious words that makes this verse sensual and feels Novel. Super 2 reveals both Garvie and Moor sound to be a reflective pair, with catchy trap songs and danceable tunes, making listeners urge for more music from the pair. Stream super 2 here.
