Discovery: Boy Spyce

Boy Spyce, the latest member of Mavin Records’ new generation of superstars, released his self-titled EP on 14th April 2022. His journey from posting covers on social media to being discovered by Don Jazzy and shooting music videos for songs of his own is a story of dreams come true. The passion can be felt in the E.P. and it shows his hunger and need to succeed. The 14 minutes 5-track E.P. is a short but sweet listen that has this writer anticipating what the youngster would do next.

Dreams: The first song on the project is a sad love song that talks about how pursuing individual dreams can lead to lost love. His love interest is leaving to pursue her dreams abroad. The song sounds extremely personal, almost autobiographical. The lyrics on this joint paint such a vivid image of the emotions one would feel at a time like this, like the mentioning of how much he would miss her food.

Bad Things: A sensual, sexy, provocative song. No need for innuendo in this song as Boy Spyce speaks very plainly of the “Many, Many, Many, Many Bad Things” he wants to do to his muse. Bad Things is the perfect addition to any “sex playlist” worth its salt. The instrumentals give off sensuality that is sure to touch your sexual chakras.

Wayo: “Wayo” is an upbeat dance track. It will surely have you nodding your head in the first 15 seconds and have you dancing by the 20th second.

Nobody: I know we have all been friend-zoned in one way or the other. This song flawlessly captures the pain of feeling an unrequited love. The accompanying visuals to this song, directed by the very talented TG Omori, also portray this pain perfectly.

Destiny: The instrumentals on this song are very Igbo Highlife – esque. It ends the E.P. on the right note as it infuses a touch of local flavour into the project.

The most noteworthy and commendable about Boy Spyce is how versatile his voice is. His voice perfectly morphs to suit every song on his project in such an effortless way it’s almost like you are listening to different people. This is exciting as you do not know which Boy Spyce you are getting on the next song. There is huge potential for this artist. His E.P. is already loved on the streets (I stopped by one of my favourite snack stands recently and they were blasting the Boy Spyce E.P. to my immense surprise and pleasure).

With his Don Jazzy co-sign, this boy wonder is on the verge of creating more beautiful music. We did not have to wait long as well, his contribution to the newly released Mavin Records team song (featuring LADIPOE, Magixx, Crayon, and Arya Starr), Overdose was nothing but a standout performance. He held his own extremely well on the song amongst his more experienced label mates. Boy Spyce has an extremely bright future ahead of him if he continues on the trajectory he is on now.
