Freshlyground has released, “Take Me Home”, the third single from their highly anticipated upcoming album of the same name. The track marks an exciting evolution for the beloved band, introducing a bluesy, deeply soulful sound that signals a bold new chapter. At the heart of this transformation is 20-year-old vocalist Mbali Makhoba, whose commanding presence breathes new life into Freshlyground. The accompanying music video, directed by Ian Gabriel, serves as a stunning introduction to Makhoba, showcasing a new voice and force.
Take Me Home is a sonic journey. “Take me home represents growth and transformation for me,” says Makhoba. “It’s a message, a heartfelt cry for peace of mind. It embodies the journey that I’ve been on. Hopefully other people who are also yearning for a sense of home and calm are going to relate.” The track speaks to anyone seeking sanctuary: those pretending they’re fine but hurting quietly, the homesick, those stuck in unappreciative relationships, or people unable to be their authentic selves. It’s for anyone searching for their chosen family, feeling misunderstood, or proudly claiming their identity.
Guitarist Josh Hawks reflects on the creative process: “The song came together quite organically over a few months. I wrote the initial chords, Simon steered it into F sharp major, Julio and Chris suggested the verse section, and Mbali came in with killer melody and rhythmical vocals. The reaction was immediate, people instantly connected.” Band member Peter Cohen’s enthusiasm is palpable: “I’m very proud of it. The cherry on top is that Mbali has put her stamp on this new version of Freshlyground. It’s super exciting and joyful to be around this new iteration of the band. I’m super chuffed with the way it has come out.”
With Mbali Makhoba at the helm and a sound that honours their roots while boldly pushing forward, Freshlyground proves they’re not just evolving; they’re thriving.
