Joeboy’s evolution as an artist has been a wondrous sight to behold in real time. Imagine being a resident lover boy for eight straight years, releasing ballads that continually resonate with the music audience. A true artist whose lyrics mirror the core principle of his heart, and soul; Love. Not many artists can boast of having a consistent release streak like the Young Legend. From his “Love & Light” EP to his “Body & Soul” album, the “Lavida Boy” has shown to be adaptable to the times while maintaining the authentic sound in his music. He doesn’t always follow the script of a hopeless romantic. His takes and perspectives on life and love have evolved and it’s evident in his pen. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is able to properly express his emotions in the most alluring and concise way possible. His ability to draw inspiration from the perspective of the lives of multiple people and the love lives of people around him is second to none.
In the past year, the Lavida Boy has incorporated a nostalgic feel to his sound. His recent songs, “Adenuga” and “Zombie” are reminiscent of old Nigerian tunes, playing out of the handbooks of Styl Plus, Bracket, Banky W, and more. This new year, he comes through with his latest offering as we inch closer to Valentine’s Day. It is the season of love after all and what better way to bask in it than with new music from the resident lover boy? Titled “SMH”, the single touches on toxicity and the toll of manipulation and emotional abuse.

On the new single, Joeboy doesn’t go the normal lover boy route. Tempoe outdoes himself with the production on this record. The haunting melodies and harmonies at the prelude are a neat touch and completely complement Joeboy’s vocal approach to his verse. Joeboy’s voice is solemn, devoid of the usual spunk, as he narrates the story from the perspective of a manipulated lover. On “SMH”, he mistakes toxicity for love. He sings, “Your attitude shows that you don’t care, But you tell me all the things Wey me I wan hear” reiterates the facade built by a toxic lover to maintain a hold on their victims even as they exhibit their true nature. Joeboy walks a mile in the shoes of a victim in a toxic relationship; The mental struggles, medications, emotional abuse, and psychological trauma endured in the relationship and even when they move on to a new partner.
With “SMH”, he drives home a clear message; Toxicity does not equal love. The chaos and rollercoaster of emotions that take a toll on mental and physical health is not worth it. It’s okay to try and see the good in people but not at the expense of your happiness. Prioritizing yourself and finding love that is worth your effort should be the ultimate life goal. This year, his goal is simple, to teach the music audience with this anthem, the ultimate form of love; Self-love.
