Zaama Disco Concert: Review

The second edition of the Zamadisco concert proves that Black Sherif is still the country’s finest export.

After a successful debut edition which was met with so many positive reviews, the second edition of Black Sherif’s Zamadisco Concert was the talk of “Detty December”. All those who missed out on the first edition had to deal with friends and attendees talking about how good the first edition was, throughout the year. The expectations had heightened. From Blacko’s POV, it’s been a good year for him, in under 12 months; he has won a BET HipHop Award, dished out guest features for Popcaan, Bas, and more, and has also partnered with Italian Fashion Brand Ellesse to introduce their Santoria 2023 Men’s collection. Overall, it’s been a good year for him and Zamadisco was the perfect way to end and celebrate a successful year.

By 4pm, Labadi Beach Hotel’s car park center was half filled with fans, probably those who opted for the 500gh ticket; which came with a meet & greet session, access to event bars, Priority entry, Autograph signing, and Merch access. After a double-check barrier, I found myself in a room with board games and a DJ set, with the exit leading to the main grounds The vibe on the grounds had started off with party-ready club music curated by iMullar Sound System, a partnership that saw the Energy Session take the Zamadisco stage.

The concert started with performances from some of Ghana’s modern artists, from SuperJazz Club to 99 PHACES, Marince Omario, Romeo Swag, Herman Suede, Exo, and Vvilage, setting the tone for a smooth show. Black Sherif’s opening set was a cinematic one. Parked by the left side of the stage was a white Jeep and accompanied by a choir, he introduced himself by performing “Sad Boyz Don’t Fold”. Blacko’s costuming choices was another highlight of the night, he started the show in an all-black matching fit with a black jacket. That alone gave away what he would look like for the remainder of the show.

After over 30 minutes of rocking the stage with his first set and an electric live band performance, he made way for featured artists to grace the stage, starting with Oseikrom Sikanii, Xlim Kid, and Fameye. He got back on stage for his second set, with a fit that made him look like a futuristic agent for Citadel. Leather, metal, mesh, boots, and a durag were sartorial tools employed by Blacko. Songs from his debut album still sounded refreshing on a live set, performing Yaya in an acoustic way with the crowd. The end of the second set paved the way for Kuame Eugene, Banero, La Meme Gang, and legendary Highlife artiste, Adane Best to serenade the crowd with classics.

For the final set which was the best set of the night, Black Sherif manifested himself in black high-fitted sportswear, using his wardrobe to highlight the influence that these subcultures have had on his music; his live performances, and his overall outlook on life. Gyrating to his hit songs before ending the concert with “Wotowoto seasoning”, undoubtedly one of the best guest verses of the year. With fireworks erupting and a lit crowd singing word for word, Blacko performed the song a total of four times, bringing a successful night to an end.

The second edition was a calm follow-up to the debut, highlighting two things; Black Sherif’s supremacy as the country’s most loved artiste and him out-growing that location in under 12 months, we can’t wait for next year’s edition.
