On Rotation: Songs you need in your life this week

Image from iOS 4

Every week, the iMullar staff round up ten songs we cannot stop listening to, forming the weekly list of songs known as “On Rotation.” You heard these recommendations here first. From the UK to Nigeria, each track from this week’s selections is guaranteed to be a vibe.

1. My Gun Got Riddim – The Free

First of all, let me say that this is not an endorsement of gun violence. I discovered this artist in the funniest of ways: an Instagram ad of his previous single “Jack Harlow” and I have been a fan ever since. The Free makes playful witty music and even makes use of onomatopoeia in the hook of this single that showing just how witty he is.

2. Ase – A COLORS SHOW by Ayra Starr

Ayra Starr is coming for everyone who has an issue with individuality on this song. Ase basically gives off the message about being who you are truly and f*ck what anyone else thinks. Premiered on A COLORS SHOW and it was written entirely by Arya so you can totally tell how personal the song is. London killed it on production as per usual.

3. Call Me Everyday – Chris Brown and Wizkid

Chris Brown had the whole world anticipating his new collaboration with Wizkid after he posted a video on Instagram dancing to this song. CB has another international cross-over hit on his hands with this slow jam.

4. Manzese – Navy Kenzo

I have been a big Navy Kenzo fan since 2015 so adding their new song, “Manzese” to this week’s On Rotation was a no-brainer. This is the first release from the Tanzanian afro-pop duo so far this year and “fingers crossed” we will hear more from them.

5. Be Mine – Seriez ft. PhoxyL

Seriez and PhoxyL come through with summer song vibes with this bubbly afrobeats song that will definitely have you swaying to the beat.

6. Feelin’ It – Groovy Jo

This rap song is bold, daring and ballsy. Groovy Jo proves that she is a force to be reckoned with by laying heavy bars on a head bopper of a beat. Get on your “Don’t mess with me” vibes with Groovy Jo’s “Feelin’ It”.

7. Dizzy – Kuiyi featuring Wambura Mugo

Kuiyu features Wambura Mugo on this tender Swahili single, “Dizzy”. The Kenyan artiste Kuiyu (most popularly known as “The Flawa Boy”), is recognised for his sensitive and emotional songwriting which is evident in this song. It had me in my feelings after the first listen.

8. Like Dat – Asari Music

Asari Music sings of betrayal and uncertainty of her lover’s intentions on her soulful afrobeats single released in March of this year. Asari Music has a strong mezzo – soprano voice that has me anticipating what else this new artist has in store.

9. Bad4U – Tay Iwar:

“Bad4U”, Tay Iwar’s latest release is very reminiscent of the sounds of the early 2000s RnB scene (if you close your eyes it’s almost as if you are listening to a Craig David song). This song will definitely have you thinking about somebody special.

10. WATAWI – CKay ft Abidoza, Davido and Focalistic:

What are we?” has to be the most awkward question to ask or have to be asked. Somehow CKay has managed to turn it into a banger. With features from Abidoza, Davido and Focalistic, this song is a strong contender for the “Song of Summer” title.
