Every week, the iMullar staff round up ten songs we can’t stop listening to which forms the weekly list of songs known as “On Rotation.” You heard these combinations here first. From South to West Africa, to the UK, each track is guaranteed to be a vibe.
1. 1da – No Wahala
Tiktok has boosted music to all corners of the world along with new trends popping up nearly every week for people to get creative with. And obviously, if the songs are as catchy as ‘No Wahala’ then it’s sure to stick. This is fun and really the motto for 2022. My vibe right now is just living life so it’s a no-brainer why I have ‘No Wahala’ On Rotation.
2. Aboutou Roots – La Blessure
Another sound that has recently become popular on TikTok is the resurgence of this Youssoumba song by the Ivorian group, Aboutou Roots. Aboutou Roots coined the vibrant musical genre Youssoumba which was made for dancing. ‘La Blessure’ combines the drums, flute, strings, and seamless harmonies. This is sure to have you up and moving!
3. Joyce Olong – Little Things
Joyce Olong’s soft and sultry voice on an almost indie meets highlife beat. A beautiful blend of different elements that create a therapeutic feel. Little Things makes me think of beautiful sunsets and those in my life who make me smile.
4. July Drama – 5050
July Drama delivers the grooves as he croons his way through ‘5050’ on a minimalist beat that has moments of layered sound. 5050 is an example of how effortless July Drama sounds on a beat.
5. Burna Boy featuring Wizkid – B.D’OR
After their ‘Ginger’ hit in 2020, it’s clear to see that our Starboy and African Giant have enjoyable chemistry. Looking forward to hearing this play at a motive and the crazy footwork to match!
6. Sango featuring asante – Novo
A visionary producer based in Seattle is known for his hip-hop and soul-infused beats as well as drawing on sounds from Brazil and Africa. ‘Novo’ features on his Brazillian-inspired mixtape ‘SANGOZINHO’. I particularly love how ‘Novo’ sounds like a musical time-lapse.
7. Titose – Forest
An R&B artist from Botswana, Titose is making waves with her authentic sound. Off of her debut EP ‘Was it Something I said?’, the song ‘Forest’ is a soothing R&B tune where Titose explores romance with such rawness.
8. Caleb Kunle – Could Be Good
‘Could Be Good’ is a feel-good track with a fusion of folk and soul. Caleb Kunle explores the possibilities of trying new things, navigating through the good and bad with the belief that it will work out.
9. Qasim – Diva
On first listen, I could hear elements of one of my favorite songs by Brandy & Monica, ‘The Boy is Mine’. Not sure whether this was intended, but I love it regardless. Qasim’s vocals ‘Diva’ is accompanied by clear-cut visuals and a short film that conveys a story during the Roaring Twenties with an ambiguous ending.
10. Tobes44 – OMG
A London native but now based in Atlanta, Tobes44 is a versatile artist with influences of dancehall, hip-hop, and drill to mention a few. His EP titled ‘RUNO’ is packed with endless vibes. Featured on this EP is this rhythmic track dubbed ‘OMG’. This is an afro-swing rap track in which Tobes44 flaunts his great lyricism and impeccable flow.
