Review: OluwahSoft – BOSS EP

We saw the young, Toronto-based Nigerian emerge onto the Afrobeat scene with his debut single ‘Body’ and since then OluwahSoft has been hard at work, refining his craft. All to deliver his latest body of work titled Blowing Off Some Steam or BOSS. Short and sweet, the long-awaited project clocks in at only 11 minutes, yet not one 4-bar goes to waste for the burgeoning artist.

Featuring rising Canadian producers Auxxie, OG Spaceman, HiddenLotvs, and Callie Majeek, Oluwahsoft is skilled in picking beats that seamlessly highlight his writing dexterity and sensuous vocals. The music is honest and relatable with his delivery sitting comfortably between that of a seasoned Afrobeat vocalist and a bubbling energetic vibe of the new Afrofusion acts we see today.

‘Lovers at First Sight’, is my personal favorite on the project purely based on melodies that generate a great ambiance. The entire EP in fact is so easy to put on and vibe to. Across four tracks, Oluwasoft is able to showcase his ability to switch up thematically, but there is still much room for growth. The title track ‘BOSS’ in particular stands out amongst the other sweeter offerings from the tape. Coming from more of a dark place, the track calls attention to the rawness in his storytelling which one might overlook.

Merely a glimpse into his musical capabilities, BOSS is a great introductory project for Oluwah. As this 18-year old heads off to university, we can’t wait to hear what a fully matured album sounds like in the near future.
