Join us on this walk down memory lane as we explore various groups who have left their marks on Ghanaian music and industry. This week the category is “Where the squad at.”
Nakorex
Nakorex was a Ghanaian Highlife supergroup active in the 1990s. Formed by the following musicians: Nat Brew, Rex Omar, and Akosua Agyapong in 1992. Nakorex was a legendary group that brought us hits like Kpanlogo, Odo Kaya, and I Love You. Nakrexo specialized in proper highlife music that remains timeless to this date.
Kpanlogo is a danceable tune that is bound to bring back memories. With its rhythmic instrumentation, Kpanalogo will have you unapologetically proud of your heritage.
Buk Bak
A dynamic duo with a unique sound and vibe, Buk Bak dominated in the early 2000s. Known for hits like U for Know, Kelewele, Kolom, Akwesi Broni, and I’m going 2 Come, Buk Bak were pioneers in the rise of the Hiplife genre. In 2013, a member of the Buk Bak, Ronnie Coaches passed away. His legacy and memory continue to live on.
Gonja Barracks is a vibrant hip life tune that will have you busting a move. Gonja Barracks was a jam.
Triple M
Known as one of the first female groups in the HIplife genre, Triple M consisted of Mercy, Mildred, and Monica. Best known for their song Koti and their feature on Castro’s Srade nam, Triple M will forever remain in our hearts.
Koti
Produced by the renowned Jay Q, Koti is a whimsical tune that depicts a woman’s interaction with a police officer.
VIP
Vision In Progress also known as VIP or VVIP was formed in 1998. VVIP, formerly known as VIP (Vision In Progress) is a Ghanaian Hiplife music group made up of Zeal, Lazzy, and Prodigal. VIP can be considered a national treasure with over 20 years of work dedicated to the hiplife genre. With countless hits throughout the years, we continue to vibe to VIP’s songs.
Akomka Womu is a hiplife classic that has been sampled by the likes of Wizkid (Manya) and Mama G (Make we Jolly). In 2014, Reggie Rockstone joined the Ghanaian group VVIP following the exit of Promzy in 2014.
4X4
Formed through the support of Buk Bak, in 2003 4X4 released their debut album Siklitele under Buk Bak. 4×4 has brought us jams such as Odo fitaa, World Trade Center, Yesi Yesi, and many more.
World Trade Center in 2009, 4×4 released World Trade Center which became an instant hit. A slow jam praising a woman’s curves. We will never forget the memorable line “ I dey love you like Americans love Obama, I go catch you like the way they want catch Osama.”
Praye
Praye is a trio comprising Praye Ho Ne Ho, Praye Tiatia, Praye Tenten. Some of their hits include My Shordy, Jacket, Angelina, Run Run Things,
Angelina who wasn’t dancing to Angelina? Angelina is one of those infectious songs that will have you dancing no matter what.

5Five is a duo which generated hits like African Gurlz, Move Back, and Bossu Kena
Muje Baya (Move Back)
No one knew what Appietus was saying, but Muje Baya was a vibe. Accompanied by a signature dance, Muje Baya was simple and easy to dance to.
FBS
The music group, FBS rocked the nation in early the 2000s. With their most popular song, Oluma Boogie, FBS told a story about an older man stealing their girls.
Akyeame
Akyeame is made up of Okyeame Quame and Okyeame Quophi. They are both solo artistes now. The group is famous for their hit, Mesan aba, which was the first hiplife song to win a major Ghana music award.

Bradez
A group comprised of Flowking Stone and Kunta Kinte, the two are collectively known as Bradez. Known for their versatility and art of rap, Bradez provided consumers with hits like One-gallon ad Simple. Simple Is that cute and romantic tune that will make you fall in love.
