A diva is defined as a celebrated female singer or as a woman who possesses outstanding talent. Often times, we find the word diva cares a negative connotation referring to a self-important person who is temperamental and/or difficult to please. This week we reclaim this word diva, not for its problematic nature but for its ability to define and capture the essence of a talented woman.

This week we spotlight, a 21st Century Diva by the name of Raquel. Raquel Naa Ayorkor Ammah popularly known as Raquel is a Ghanaian songstress, songwriter, composer, choreographer, and actress. Blessed with a mellifluous voice and magnetic stage presence, Raquel first emerged onto the music scene in 2005.
Raised in London with Ghanaian roots, Raquel has been able to infuse two worlds and cultures in her music. With musical influences such as Brandy, Shirley Brown, Aaliyah, Monica, Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, and SWV, Raquel’s influences speak to her musical style. Raquel is known for her ability to deliver relatable and heartfelt songs that speak to all. She captivated consumers with relatable ballads which can be categorized under the genres Afro-Pop, Afrobeat and Afro-Soul. Raquel has collaborated with artists such as Sarkodie, Okyeame Kwame, Trigmatic, D-Black and EL. Throughout her career, Raquel has experimented with her sound and delivered a wide variety of tracks which showcase her vocal ability and musical talent.

To date, Raquel has released one EP entitled “Best of Both Worlds,” alongside a series of singles. This week, we celebrate Raquel for contributing her unique voice and musical style to the music industry. This week the category is “Vibes of a Diva.”
