We gathered to celebrate the 18th edition of the SAFTAs at the Gallagher Convention Centre, where we recognised the incredible talent of our South African actors, actresses, producers, content creators, directors, and the favourite shows that light up our TV screens and social media feeds.
The evening kicked off with a thrilling performance by the legendary Zola 7, who transported the audience back in time with his hit songs like “Umdlwembe” and “Ghetto Fabulous.” MultiChoice and M-Net’s DStv channels took home a remarkable total of 46 awards. Earlier this year, we were taken aback by Amazon Prime Video’s sudden departure from South African original productions. Nevertheless, they managed to secure seven awards, with five going to “The Fragile King,” which also won the award for “Best Feature Film”.
Twelve categories highlighted various programs on SABC 2, while eTV captured four awards. The standout moment of the evening was “Shaka iLembe,” which swept the competition, winning twelve awards, including “Best TV Drama”. Additionally, we recognized online content creators, with Noko Mashaba earning the title of Best Online Content for a YouTube/Facebook series that focused on the challenges faced by the youth. In his acceptance speech, Noko inspired young people to chase their dreams and harness their creativity.
We must also acknowledge the lifetime achievement award recipient, Mfundi Vundla, renowned for creating one of South Africa’s longest-running soap operas, “Generations,” along with sculptor Arthur Molepo. The attendees looked absolutely fabulous in their formal gowns, traditional outfits, and tuxedos. A big congratulations to all the nominees and winners!
