The cowboy, a symbol of the American West, has long been a source of fascination and inspiration. Their rugged, individualistic spirit, coupled with their distinctive style, has captured the imagination of people around the world. From the wide-brimmed hats to the sturdy boots, the cowboy aesthetic has left an enduring mark on fashion and culture.
While the cowboy era may have passed, its influence continues to shape contemporary style. In recent years, we’ve witnessed a resurgence of Cowboy-inspired fashion, particularly among younger Black generations. This renewed interest can be attributed to a variety of factors, including a growing nostalgia for simpler times, a desire for individuality, and a broader cultural shift towards authenticity.
One pivotal moment in the recent resurgence of cowboy fashion was the release of Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” album. Her alter ego, Cowboy Carter, exuded a raw, powerful energy, clad in fringed jackets, wide-brimmed hats, and knee-high boots.

Pharrell Williams’ AW24 Collection for Louis Vuitton can also be credited for the rise of the Black Cowboy fashion. His third collection for the fashion house combines Black streetwear with the Cowboy style to create a unique look.

Black celebrities, style experts and creatives across the globe have been quick to adopt the cowboy trend, each putting their unique spin on the classic look.
King Promise for one, channelled the cowboy look in the visuals of his latest song ‘Keep It Sexy’, opting for a full Canadian tuxedo finished off with a cowboy hat. On the red carpets too, we have seen the likes of Adekunle Gold, Stonebwoy and Datartgod tap into their cowboy era donning looks inspired by the subculture.

Looking to incorporate the cowboy aesthetic into your wardrobe? Here are a few tips:
- Start with the Basics: Invest in a well-made pair of cowboy boots. They can be dressed up or down and are a timeless piece.
- Embrace Denim: Denim jackets, jeans, and overalls are essential elements of the cowboy look. Opt for classic cuts and washes for a timeless appeal.
- Accessorize: A cowboy hat, a bolo tie, or a fringed scarf can elevate any outfit.
- Layer Up: Layer a denim jacket over a flannel shirt or a t-shirt for a classic Western look.
- Play with Colors and Patterns: While traditional Western wear often features earthy tones, don’t be afraid to experiment with bold colours and patterns.
