Cape Town’s Mount Nelson Hosts Confections x Collections, A Celebration of African Fashion

The iconic Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town recently hosted the second edition of Confections x Collections, a platform that celebrates African fashion and its global impact. This year’s event showcased the work of four exceptional designers: South Africa’s Rich Mnisi and Lukhanyo Mdingi, and Nigeria’s Adeju Thompson and Bubu Ogisi.

Rich Mnisi’s “Nambu (River)” collection offered a modern interpretation of traditional Tsonga heritage, blending bold patterns and luxurious fabrics. As Mnisi explained, “Each garment serves as a medium for individuals to weave their own narratives, navigating the intricate layers of identity with every stitch and seam.”

Lukhanyo Mdingi, known for his cerebral approach to design, returned to South Africa to showcase his latest collection. His work, often inspired by African history and culture, reflects a commitment to lineage-building and elevating African fashion on the global stage.

Adeju Thompson’s Lagos Space Programme presented a collection that challenged Western stereotypes about African fashion. By reinterpreting traditional Yoruba aesthetics, Thompson created modern, sophisticated garments that are both elegant and culturally significant.

Bubu Ogisi’s IAMISIGO showcased a collection of bold, beaded garments that celebrated the rich heritage of African craftsmanship. “We use fashion to tell different stories,” Ogisi said. “Textiles are a medium to introduce people to new ways of dressing, seeing, and evolving.”

The final day of Confections x Collections was a grand finale, featuring a retrospective of 11 designers who have showcased at the event since its inception in 2022. The event also marked the launch of a new tea set designed by Sindiso Khumalo, which will be available for purchase in 2025.

“Over these past few days, we’ve paid homage to African heritage through contemporary fashion,” said Tiago Moraes Sarmento, Managing Director of Belmond Southern Africa. “Between our signature Afternoon Tea and the incredible fashion from these designers, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing the creation of new legacies right here on our grounds.”

Confections x Collections and the accompanying exhibition, “Against the Bias – Unravelling Material Codes,” further cemented Mount Nelson’s position as a cultural hub and a destination for fashion and art enthusiasts.
