Rapper DEELA releases visuals for hit single ‘GET A GRIP’

DEELA, the Lagos-born Rapper, has the music industry sitting up with her debut single ‘Intro to DEELA’. The fierce track with fierce bars to match shows why the industry needs to keep its eye on DEELA. DEELA last year released her self-titled EP, which got the attention of music magazine The NATIVE, who spotlighted her song ‘The Game’.

DEELA is a talented and versatile rapper that we were super excited to catch up with. We can agree DEELA is next up, and we wanted to get to know her better and shed light on her music journey so far:

When did you start your music journey, and what motivated you to begin?

“Funny enough I was invited to feature on someone’s track with literally no experience in songwriting, I wrote a really good verse! After that, I found myself beat surfing on YouTube and writing songs during my free time.

Although I was making songs, I wasn’t releasing them, I was quite shy when it came to sharing my songs. I properly started my music journey at the start of the pandemic… so in March 2020. My A-Level exams had just been cancelled due to the pandemic which left me with no academic obligations; this motivated me to officially release my debut song ‘Intro to DEELA’ on SoundCloud.”

Tell us more about ‘GET A GRIP’. What is it all about?

“GET A GRIP is simply about enjoying your single life! I mostly explore how I navigate my life as a single woman and the experiences I’ve had with people that I’m sure others resonate with. It’s kind of like the perfect song to sing if you’re dealing with someone who you’re not ‘exclusive’ with but they keep biting off way more than they’re supposed to chew haha.”

If you were to describe your music to someone that did not know you, how would you describe it?

“I’d say my music can be audacious, especially my lyrics! Not one DEELA song sounds the same so I’d go with versatile too. Hype music is always sure to put you in a good mood about yourself and is similar to Flo Milli’s and Asian Doll but still unique in her own way.”

What can we expect to see from you in the future?

“My first official single of the year! I’ve just turned twenty and refer to my twenties as my ‘Trap twenties,’ thus the single will be titled TRAPSTAR and released later this month.”
