Are music trends really important as they seem?

In unprecedented times, music has arguably become an escape from the continuous happenings across the globe. Music has become that safe space for all to create to feel peace or even escape all the noise. For the African people, music has become such a staple in their lives, so much so that it is almost a nightmare to imagine how life would be without music.

However, like everything else in life, music has its peaks and troughs, which can be quite questionable. Jumping from the perspective of the creators of music to the listeners, the powerhouse fanbase of artists, music trends have been known to sway the people.

But is that what lies ahead for the future of music? Are the lovers of African music meant to succumb to the temporary trends of fast paced music in our era?

Trends in such regard are coming to form the perspective of styles in music that arrive onto the scene and become a frequent style most artists utilize. For Ghana, drill beats came up when the people were wailing for difference, and it is more than safe to say that the genre has quickly become a favourite for the Ghanaian people, with new artists playing and experimenting with this new sound.

The million-dollar question remains: do African music lovers gravitate toward the different trends? Is the introduction of an entirely new genre of music something listeners should enjoy? The answer to such questions is very unclear, almost because there is no precise answer or level of estimation for this.

Africans are lovers of uniqueness, and we are wired to appreciate uniqueness as a people. However, when such essence does not carry an iota of purpose or impact, it tends to leave a very sour taste in listeners’ mouths.

Hence, Alté music is becoming more than superior in the musical sense and other ways of sonic expressions, such as highlife, are not all the rage as it once was. Music trends constantly experience an evolution, and these are all on the quest of introducing new energies into the African music space.

Like anything else under the sun, it could be an absolute hit or a
massive miss. With that being said, it is more than safe to conclude that trends in music give such a space its validity only if executed precisely.

For such reasons, Africans are well known for their astounding levels of diversity and open-mindedness. We are constantly being introduced to different dimensions of music as a collective, which goes as far as widening our sense for something fresh and, eventually, enjoying and grooving with such sonic freshness until it has no choice but to become permanent.
