Get to Know Tiisha, Zylofon Music’s Emerging Goddess

In 2020, the global music industry saw a rise in the number of female musicians making waves collectively across music charts and popular culture. Acts like Megan thee Stallion, Flo Milli and Cardi B all held top chart spots winning notable accolades across the industry.

Despite the lows of 2020, women in music have continued to foster ecosystems of support by inspiring and elevating nu generations of female artistes. On our continent, collaborations between industry veterans like EFYA and Tiwa Savage to rapidly rising star talents like Amaarae, Moliy and Asi have proven that women are fast becoming a formidable force across popular culture.

Following this trend, more and more young women are taking steps to introduce the world to their craft. Tiisha is one such artiste. The young talent released her debut single ‘Packaging‘ in 2019, a feel-good yet thoughtful song about the pressures to keep up appearances in an increasingly materialistic society. Tiisha was then quickly noticed by Zylofon Media Music Label who signed the budding singer a few months later.

Despite her slightly more safe-for-work persona, Tiisha’s unique, deeper toned voice has led to comparisons with the late Ebony Reigns, wild antics aside. But in a world that consistently tokenizes and pits talented women against each other, talents like Tiisha graciously face and debunk these comparisons by recognizing those before her whilst still pursuing her craft as authentically as possible. iMullar briefly caught up with the promising artiste about who exactly Tiisha is and what she and her music stands for.

M-Who is TIISHA?

Well…Tiisha is a Ghanaian Afropop singer and songwriter. I was born and raised in the capital city, Accra with family roots in Asante Mampong (Ashanti Region).

M-Why music?

I first started singing in primary school. My teachers took notice of my voice and I was eventually added to my local church choir. So I have always been about the music. I want to achieve a certain level of performance and entertainment regardless of influencing trends. I just want to become one of the greatest artistes to ever do it.

M-What is TIISHA’s message?

My message is good music, but also like a high level of quality in production and creativity when it comes to my visuals. I want everyone to be the best version of themselves effortlessly. I want to teach people to accept their royalty whilst acknowledging the power we possess; especially for me as an artiste and a woman in today’s society.

M-What makes TIISHA different and why should people listen to her music?

I have been described as a naturally entertaining talent. So I want my music to embody this even though I am still early on in my career, with few releases and no features. Right now I am just trying to understand my craft and groom it to perfection. My songs usually have a storyline approach with catchy or interesting melodies that are bound to get you singing or dancing along. From ‘Packaging‘ to ‘6:30‘ and now ‘Goddess‘, I always want my music to resonate with a wide range of listeners who like good music and also want to be entertained lyrically.

M-How has Zylofon Music impacted on your artistry and growth?

I want to be able to create authentic and original African music so signing to Zylofon Music is a great stepping stone for me. I hope that working with the label will not only help me realize my goals but also grow my craft along the way. Being able to work with label executives and top-notch industry producers through Zylofon will give me the platform I need to increase my reach and target a global audience.

M-What was the inspiration behind the “Goddess” video?

The creation of Goddess was a process that involved my ideas, the songwriter’s, label executives’ and the video director, Mickey Johnson. The main inspiration was as a part or continuation to the story of the Goddess Queen Tiisha (from Zylofon Chronicle) and also follows a storyline where me aha the Goddess is awoken from her tomb by some explorers and then returns to claim her throne. We used common themes relating to African Royalty with Egyptian-like settings and clothing. The video concept portrays high energy, royalty and supernatural power/spirituality, the very elements that Goddess Tiisha boasts of.

We basically set out to create a whole new world and storyline with this project, going all out with the production quality. This video sets the tone for what people can expect from me and Zylofon Music as a label.

M-What makes TIISHA feel goddess-like?

The envisioning of GODDESS Tiisha came through a joint creative project with the label executives and me. In the process of writing a couple of songs, we came up with this identity where I see myself as a queen. This character ‘Goddess Tiisha’ is meant to have abilities beyond human comprehension.

The story is also part of an ongoing project with the label as seen in Zylofon Chronicle, a short film released a few days before the song. It tells a story of creative reflection of my life struggles ahead of being given the opportunity by Zylofon Music. After joining forces with Zylofon, I am able to assume the character of the Goddess Queen Tiisha, who is the “queen” of “Ghana Music” (hopefully later The World).

M-What other African female artistes do you want to collaborate with?

I have a lot since I have a lot of ideas but if I have to narrow it down to pick an immediate four, it’ll be Angelique Kidjo, Yemi Alade, Tiwa Savage & Becca.

M-What’s next for TIISHA?

I am looking forward to working on more creative projects with a high level of production. Getting ready to release more songs and possibly some collaborations and maybe even start planning out a tour to introduce people to some authentic projects being worked on with my label. All music fans and lovers should watch out for my next live performance as it is set to be something our industry has never seen before.
