Blast From The Pastrex

This is a celebration of Rex Lawson and his ability to make us feel.

This week we focus on the emotive and dynamic trumpeter and singer, Cardinal Rex Jim Lawson. Hailing from Kalabar, Lawson and his River Men transmuted the sound and face of Highlife in the late ’50s and ’60s. With an extensive catalogue, Lawson was known for his passion, charisma, and vulnerability. Lawson possessed an intrinsic ability to connect with his audience and evoke emotion through his performances. He was revered for wearing his heart on his sleeve which was evident in how often he wept on stage.

Irrespective of the language barrier, he made us understand every phrase of his song, every beat of it, every instrumentation and composition through his unbridled emotions. We present to you fifteen of his records that will make you feel the charm that connected us to his music.

The category is “ The Lawson Connect.”
