The ‘Africaness’ Of La Même Gang’s Reveal

A Display Of Rich Ghanaian Culture

The music collective La Meme Gang in 2018 released their second album entitled “Linksters,” which featured 20 songs. The album to fans is a nice body of work by the collective, that allowed the individual artists in the collective to display their prowess. La Même is known for putting out visuals that are pretty far from the regular, looking at the visuals for their hit songs ‘Godzilla’, ‘Stone Island’, ‘Kemor Ame’ amongst others which makes it quite obvious the aim of their creative direction is to stand out and serves fan with distinct visuals.

Track 7 which is ‘Reveal’ features DarkoVibes and Spacely produced by Kayso has been established as La Même’s attempt to embracing the great traditional cultures of Ghana, and express their admiration for African women visualized, was rightly captured by directed by the phenomenal David Duncan. The song talks about true love, where both musicians expressed their love for girls they fancied.A009 C004 0112FE 004.00 00 47 06.Still004A009 C004 0112FE 004.00 00 47 06.Still004

The video was shot at Ote falls in the Eastern Region of Ghana. For a love song, we expected everything from the video except the fact this time they decided to go all African, yes! entirely African in terms of outfit, location, and aesthetics. Every single thing in the video showcased Ghana’s rich culture and a few cultural values, from the outfits worn by the beautiful girls, the cloths and Kente used by the handsome boys all made with African prints, the beautiful waterfalls, down to the mountain areas just showed everything Africa has to offer and more.A009 C004 0112FE 004.00 01 23 04.Still005

A scene in the video saw DarkoVibes singing his verse and moving to a girl in a two-piece outfit made from African prints with a container in hand which in terms means she was walking down to the river to fetch water as this happens in a traditional setting. In an African community setting, Women go to the river with her pot to fetch water for the family. Women often do this in groups to make the journey pleasing since they would have to walk for miles. Spacely is also spotted with the girl he fancied wearing an African print gown on a part of the mountain as he sings his verse of the song, dancing and smiling looking all bubbly in beautiful long sleeves and trousers also made from beautifully coloured African prints.

RJZ in the final parts of the video is seen putting on a kente in a particular style which is usually worn by men during certain occasions like a naming ceremony, Traditional marriage, and more is seen “blessing the union” of Spacely and his girl as their community made up of their friends and family gather around them to witness the ceremony, a depiction of how traditional marriages happen in some parts of Ghana. Kiddblack is also seen in a boat with a girl as a boat rider rides takes them on a cruise. It could also be they were using the boast as a mode of transportation across the falls as usually done in some parts of Ghana.A009 C004 0112FE 004.00 02 43 12.Still007

Reveal certainly different if you would agree with me. David Duncan did an amazing job on this video, every single scene displays some cultural practices and some values held in high esteem. The Ghana culture is beautiful and it was well showcased perfectly well in Reveal.
