Amaarae’s “Sad Girlz Luv Money” gets a fresh rework

Amaarae is an exceptional talent. Forever one to break down barriers and with her genre-bending hits, the track “Sad Girlz Luv Money” was initially a single featuring fellow Ghanaian vocalist, Moily, from her 2020 debut, The Angel You Don’t Know.

Colombian-American R&B star, Kali Uchis then joins the pair for the latest second edition. The track, an internet sensation, took the globe by storm. It was impossible to scroll on TikTok without catching the infectious refrain:

I really like to party / I cannot control my body

Already an other-worldly track, with the addition of Kali Uchis’ bilingual lyrics, the Latin and Afropop elements alchemized into a track from another dimension.

From the futuristic visuals alone it is clear, this movie (because it goes beyond being simply a music video) has a serious creative team behind it. With model cameos, there are so many style moments to break down in this video. Everyone kitted out in looks from the late Mugler, Saint Laurent, Vivienne Westwood, in addition to custom pieces from Lagos-based stylist, Daniel Obasi.

Spearheaded by director Remi Laudat, the high-tech optics delivered are the perfect visual counterpart to this bad bitch anthem.  Featuring multiple focalised shots of women, it is clear that power is a principal theme. As the first female act to debut a solo single on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, Amaarae encapsulated all of that in this video.

The iMullar is the voice of emerging African music and the lifestyle that surrounds it, showcasing exceptional talent from all around the globe focused on promoting the most distinctive new artists and original sounds, we are the authority on who is next.
