On Rotation: Songs You Need in Your Life This Week

Back again with another #OnRotation featuring ten tracks the team at The iMullar cannot get enough of this week. You heard these combinations here first. From East to West Africa, then to the UK, each track is guaranteed to be a vibe. Listen back to all ten in the “On Rotation” playlist.

1. Hameed Idowu – Control X

A Nigerian-American singer making self-proclaimed “wazy” music, Hameed is keen not to be quickly boxed into one genre or simply have the ‘alte’ label slapped onto the tracks he puts out. ‘Control X’ is a beautiful display of his vocals. The track intertwined with melodic Yoruba has optimal replay value.

2. Mo’Gunz – No Civility

As a part of the new wave of street hip hop sounds emerging from the continent, Mo’Gunz is definitely one to watch. With great storytelling in between each hard-hitting bar, ‘No Civility’ is an excellent blend of traditional West African influences merged with the high energy flows seen in contemporary drill tracks.

3. Zubi, anatu, Gabriel – gentil

From their collaborative project, trinity, the trio bring together their unique respective talents to deliver what is truly a melodious body of work. On ‘gentil’ my personal standout, Zubi’s vocals simply dance across the track. It’s a great closing track, making you want to replay the entire EP all over again.

4. CKay – Felony

CKay has seen plenty of global success from the remix of ‘love nwantiti’ on TikTok. His entire catalogue has been on rotation with the track ‘Felony’personally having a chokehold on me. The lyrics, the beat, the vibes: on every aspect it delivers.

5. Yin – Domitila

Nigerian singer and international DJ, Yin has long been making moves. Now more recently we are seeing her rebrand as a solo artist. ‘Domitila’ her first release of the year sees her take on the Afrofusion sound. With mesmerizing vocals and waist-shaking rhythms, we simply cannot get enough.

6. Bensoul featuring Sauti Sol, Nviiri the Storyteller, Mejja – Nairobi

In a track named after the capital, Bensoul brings together Kenya’s best artists on a personal track themed around promiscuity. Describing the city as one ‘big bedroom’, Bensoul illustrates a vivid picture lyrically of the dating scene in ‘Nairobi’.

7. Victoria Kimani featuring Bella Shmurda – Gimme Money

The track ‘Gimme Money’ comes off Victoria Kimani’s album Spirit Animal, which is currently being considered for Grammy nomination. The project is littered with incredible features. And for this track, the Afropop queen enlists the help of Bella Smurda to provide us with an up-tempo club banger.

8. AV – Confession

The starlet’s current buzz is well deserved. As a follow-up to the viral hit ‘Big Thug Boys’, AV delivers this sweet ballad as his sophomore single for the year. With distinct vocals and catchy lyrics, there is an art to his creation of a flawless, infectious riddim.

9. Dai Verse – Cocaine

The perfect addition to any Afroblues playlist. The Nigerian singer and songwriter Dai Verse blessed us with this beautiful vibe. With the addictive nature of this track, you would think that it was laced with ‘cocaine’.

10. Masterkraft – Brown Skin

The introductory track to his EP Master Groove. ‘Brown Skin’, as given away by the title, is an ode to melanin-enriched queens. The talented Masterkraft is able to deliver this over the grooviest production. His message is reinforced by the gorgeous visuals. An upbeat, uplifting banger!
