WEEK 19 – NEW SOUNDS
New artistes find ways of capturing our hearts with their sounds and we are not even complaining, this is the only kind of love we want, the ones that come with music. This week features Chief Kellz, DJ Millzy, Pzee Fire, Erby, Copta, Younga101, Dellis, Queku Premo, Oniisha, Kay T and Big Burn TBA.

Okwantuni is a lo-fi hip-hop record produced by Lee but mixed and mastered by Blaze the in-house Sound Engineer for BloodLine. This song documents the life of a traveller from a young man’s perspective, the expectations, disappointments and failed ambitions that come with leaving one’s place of birth in search of greener pastures. Chief Kellz also gave us some very personal narratives relating to his family where he made mention of losing one half of his twin sister at birth and how it affected his family. Bully came with that eclectic voice mixed with poetry and re-assured us no matter how hard life in Accra gets, there are the little things we can be happy about. Believe me, this record is enough to make you shed a tear.

The message behind Oniisha’s TARI EP is quite emotional and inspiring at the same time, when I asked about the EP, this is what he had to say, “TARIi s art and a collection of emotional and sensational modern AfroPop and Alternative music that talks about emotions, appreciation and experiences with love. “TARI” means love and is derived from the “Ijaw” tribe in Nigeria (Bayelsa State to be precise) and that’s my tribe. The project expresses most of the emotional states I experienced; from pressure from parents to not do music, through heartbreaks, appreciation of loved ones, admiration of African beauty and giving up in attempting the Love Game all over again. I aim to release music that is not just unique but one that different people can relate with and not some false fantasy. I really hope that people/fans enjoy my art and share it with their friends and family because the main reason for everything is “Love” and that’s the strong bond we all need to keep going.” God bless. The prolific Rapper is alternately serious, catchy and playful on his new single pack “ROSSO ON THE WAY”’.
Copta’s discography is a trademark fueled by Moor Sound’s sonic magic production, having a chemistry that roots back to their joint tape with King Jiey in 2018 and Garvie’s project earlier this year, the rapper releases another single pack with two heavy slappy songs, well known for drawing inspiration from Modern culture and lifestyle, Copta’s first song off his single pack says it all, “Asem Bi” showcase glittering keys, MIDI strings, and organ swells that suits the rappers unique voice, and purifies the message the song carries, it’s a direct tune that basically says there’s no time to play around and that everything that has to be said must be said directly with no sugar quotes, the lyrics are youthful and has comic references, with The rapper singing “got the world on my hand I’m thanos”. The stand out of the song is BBNZ’s Kojo Cue, who delivers a verse that lights surrealism and humour in the song, following the trend set by Copta. “The second song features Sizz the truth, “Gimme More’s production is complex, with undulating keys and slurry drums kick, sounding for a second like they’re two loops running deliberately out of sync, with both rappers printing their style on the beats, the song carries a different kind of flex, throwing in one of hiphop’s main theme, cash. Sizz raps about finessing other girls, adding a little sauce to the song’s theme. These 2 songs are released in a single pack titled ‘Rosso on the Way’, a prequel to Copta’s project to be released in the last quarter which he calls ‘Rosso’, following up the release of his single ‘Aseti’ which is the only song so far confirmed to be on ‘Rosso’. The duo has elevated the usual vanity hip-hop collaboration into a maelstrom of head-spinning loop science intertwined with Rap’s basics, and with Moor Sound on the wheel, he drives a well-uniformed beat to fit all aspects of the songs, making all songs bangers. From the intro through to track 10 are different waves and stories they have both experienced. “The first half of the project is the embodiment of our ego and the second half takes you through a more human side of us”, says Kay T.

Selorm Lucian Mensah known musically as Younga101 is set to release his debut tape, he calls it I MADE PINK GANGSTER, he had this to say about his upcoming tape.
“Over a long stretch of time, music has been and still is essential art. Talents have been identified, harnessed and reproduced into delightful art forms which have crossed borders. Bringing talent to light is almost impossible without the impeccable work you do as a blogger so I want to use this opportunity to introduce myself Younga101, as well as I, make pink gangster, my upcoming project. I have worked on a number of tracks including Troubled Child, Distin, Fiona and many others, collaborating with other artistes like Questo and B. Botch. My project, I make pink gangster is not only a subtle campaign against toxic masculinity but the motivation for expansion of talent, encouraging artistes to move out of their comfort zone, sampling other genres. I started rapping at a young age, strictly sticking to hip hop and freestyle battles. Over the years, I included singing, and then RnB as well as Afrobeat. Spreading my wings has not only improved my perspective on music but also sharpened my talent. This is the outcome my project is designed to achieve.
