This week on Blast From The Past, we are giving you Part Two featuring some more Hip-life classics. Hip-life is defined as the fusion of highlife, hip-hop, and various other sounds originating from Ghana. Hip-life is a distinct genre that originated from the Gold Coast in the early 90’s. This playlist has been curated to celebrate songs within the African Diaspora, which will forever remain in our heart, mind and soul. This week the category continues to be “Hip-life Classics,” in no particular order. Feel the groovy and energy, as you catch a vibe!
1 .Faro ft. Akatakyie – ‘Ɔdɔ Esisi Mi’
Ɔdɔ Esisi Mi is a hip life classic that will forever be in our hearts. In 1999, dynamic duo, Akatakyie released Ɔdɔ Esisi Mi , a song reminiscing on betrayal by a love one.
2. VIP – ‘Daben Na Odo Be ba’
With hits upon hits, VIP also known as Vision in Progress is an iconic hiplife group. In 2001, the group dropped an album entitled Lumbe Lumbe Lumbe, on this album was their smashing hit “Daben na Odo Beba”.”Daben na Odo Beba” is a song which poses the question when will love come.
3. Deeba – ‘Deeba’
If you are looking for something catchy and fun, Deeba is the song for you. Deeba will have you chanting and dancing with this catchy anthem.
4. Mzbel ft Castro – ‘16 Years’
16 Years was a massive hit back in the days. Mzbel and Castro paired on this hit by providing consumers with and danceable beat and proactive lyrics.
5. Castro – ‘Boneshaker’
“Take your omega, make I take my Boneshaker”. Boneshaker is an insightful jam with a simple message about being content with what you have.
6. VIP – ‘Ahomka Womu’
Sampled by the likes of Wizkid, Ahomka Womu, was a hit song that crossed over into many countries within the continent of Africa. With its danceable beat produced by the Hip life tycoon Jay Q, Ahomka Womu is easy to sing and cool enough to be a groove.
7. CashFace – 419
Made up of Shilo, Castro, and Screwface, Cashface was a hiplife group that brought us classic such as Abongo Lorry and 419. 419 is a fun song detailing a guy attempt at collecting a phone number.
8. Buk Bak – Komi Ke Kena
Off the album, “Komi Kἐ Kena”, Komi Ke Kena is a classic hiplife song with a mix of a ragga flow and highlife elements. We are definitely fans of “Komi Kἐ Kena.”
9. 4×4 – ‘Sikletele’
Sikletele is a party jam that would have you busting a move. Influenced by the Group Buk Bak, 4×4 has made a mark in hip life. What is sweeter in life than Sikletele?
10. FBS – ‘Old Man Boogey ft. Tinny’
In 2004, the group FBS, dropped this banger entitled Old Man Boogey. Coupled with an infectious dance, FBS had people jamming to with this tune.
